PTA News – Autumn Term 2016

Welcome!

Glorious greetings from the first PTA Newsletter of this academic year and an extra welcome to all the new parents and carers that are now members of the PTA having joined St Mary’s at the beginning of term. We hope you find these newsletters useful and informative.

Our PTA exists to raise funds to benefit the pupils of St Mary’s School, to enrich their time here, their learning experiences and environment. Read on to find out how we’ve been achieving that recently.

Easy Ways to Raise Funds…

Bag 2 School Collections – Bag 2 School is a company that buys re-usable second hand clothing. We bag up our outgrown or unwanted clothing, paired shoes, handbags, hats and soft toys (any bag will do!); Bag 2 School collects the bags, weighs them and sends us a cheque – that’s it! June’s collection raised over £150, which was more than the previous one. Let’s make this one another record! The collection day is Thursday 29th September. We don’t have space to store bags in school prior to collection so please bring them to school with you on Thursday morning. Many thanks! Find out more here: www.bag2school.com

School Trends – school uniform online – This service was set up just before the summer holidays. We wanted to offer parents an additional way to buy their children’s school uniform and everything seems to be online these days. You can order items to be delivered to your home address for a small fee or get your order delivered to school for free (your package will be sent home with your child as soon as it arrives). Their items are less expensive than the School Uniform Shop in Hereford, but delivery at peak times may take up to a couple of weeks. The great news is that the PTA receive a small percentage of every single purchase! Some parents who used this service over the summer, reported some teething problems, so the rep came to see me and talk things over this week. The company took on board everything that was said and apologised profusely for the effects of being short staffed at such a busy time of year – they will not let the same thing happen again (some customers were having to wait 2 days before customer services were returning their calls). The rep is also sending in some samples for parents to feel the quality of the garments. Please note, they offer uniform, bags, coats, hats, swimming hats, water bottles and much more – many of which are available with or without the school logo on and their prices are very competitive. Some parents gave us feedback that it was really hard finding our school’s section on the School Trends website. You can search by entering our postcode, which is HR1 4PG or by typing in the following: St Mary’s C of E Primary School and going through the other schools by the same name until you find our address. Empties Please – recycle ink cartridges from your printer and raise £££s for school! The Empties Please cardboard collection box can be found in the entrance under the office hatch. There is also one in the office for the children to use if they bring some into school. Check out the details on the collection bag to find out how it works. There are a few makes and models they’re unable to accept but they are listed on the bag. Please consider helping fill our recycling bins because each cartridge could earn us up to £1! Stamptastic – we have just registered with this company, so don’t have any promotional material yet. However, their website is well worth a look. Their stamps look amazing and delivery is free! We receive 20% cashback on all orders which is increased to 30% if we put a link to their website on our website. When ordering, please enter our unique code, to ensure we receive the cashback offer – FOWNHOPE. Stamptastic have also given us a voucher to use as a prize in our Grand Prize Draw (read on for more details). Here is their web address: www.stamptastic.co.uk

PTA LOTTERY – At the end of each term the PTA holds its lottery. Minimum entry is £1 a month (each £1 = 1 entry) but anyone purchasing £5 or more of draw entries per month will also be entered in the Santa bonus Christmas draw. Every term the first prize is £100 and the second prize is £50. There are also 5 third prizes of £10 to be won. Entry forms are available from the school office or you can fill out the cut off form at the end of the newsletter which you can download here. Alternatively, you could set up a Direct Debit to credit ‘The Friends of St Mary’s School Fownhope Lottery’ [Sort Code 40-24- 11 (HSBC Hereford), A/C number 81658743] but you would also need to notify us that you are doing so. The PTA Lottery Co-ordinator is Helen Culshaw who has 2 boys in Year 5 and you can contact her via a named envelope to the school office.

PTA AGM – Monday 10th October 2016 @ 6.30pm

It was lovely to see all of the teachers at last year’s Annual General Meeting. This event is your chance to get the low down on your PTA’s income and expenditure over the past year and have your say on what you feel should happen/ be the priorities during the coming 12 months. We’re always looking for volunteers on the PTA Committee, people to step up and join the band of Class Reps, help out at events etc – more hands make light work – BUT you won’t be talked into anything just because you come to the AGM!!

Your current committee are: Rachel Hart (Chair), Gillian Robertson (Vice Chair), Sarah Powell (CoTreasurer), Cath Davey (Co Treasurer), Gina Borman (Secretary), Helen Culshaw (Lottery Coordinator) and Grace Cooke (Social Media Coordinator).

School Outdoor Improvement Days – Tues 1st & Weds 2nd November 2016

This was briefly mentioned on the latest edition of the School Bell. Mr Milne has arranged for the children to get involved with improving their outdoor learning environment. Gina Borman (Maggie’s mum, Year 2) is rallying the troops and hoping to be able to build some play equipment/make some additional play areas in the school grounds. She’d love to hear from you if you could help in any way – all materials and labour gratefully received! The children had a lovely outdoor surprise this week – the Trim Trail has been fixed and improved and is now back in action!

Painting Day

The event on September 1st was a great success and well deserved thanks go to those involved. However, there is still so much to do! If you could spare a weekend day to help finish staining the fences, that would be brilliant. Perhaps a sunny day over October half-term? The more the merrier and the less time it would take. Parents, carers, grandparents, extended family and children are all welcome and eagerly invited! So far we have a small handful of people that have offered to spend one dry weekend day painting soon, but to get the job finished in one go, we need more volunteers. Please contact one of the Committee members if you’re able to help.

Class Reps

Class Reps organise their fellow parents to take turns to man their class stall at the Summer Fete and Christmas Fair. New classes = new parents! If you’d like to put your name forward, please contact us or your class teacher. We’re not going to presume that last year’s class reps want to do it again this year but will contact you if the Christmas Fair is looming and your class isn’t covered!

Grand Prize Draw

We did this last year at the Christmas Fair and it was a big hit with loads of wonderful prizes. We plan on running it again this year but haven’t started our appeal for prizes yet (although we do have the Stamptastic voucher now!). Last year’s prizes included shopping vouchers, family days out, an Amazon Fire tablet, gym membership, spa treatments, family Sunday lunches and many more. If you know someone who could, or are able to donate a prize yourself, we would be forever grateful. The early prizes will be advertised on the tickets themselves, but everyone who donates a prize is featured in the Christmas Fair event programme and on our private Facebook page (for parents and carers only). When the books of draw tickets are sent home, please be aware that we’re not *expecting* you to sell them all or buy them yourself. If you can then great but if you can’t or don’t want to, then please just return them to school so that they can be offered to someone else.

Wear What You Like day – Thursday 8 th December 2016

No monetary donations required for this event but the children get to come to school in their own clothes in exchange for a donation for one of the Christmas Fair stalls. This is usually a bottle for the bottle tombola or cakes for the refreshment stall.

Christmas Fair – Friday 9 th December 2016 3pm – 6pm

Following last year’s event success, we’re going to do similar again this year. However, this time we plan to have two classrooms dedicated to independent sellers to ensure that they all have regular visitors. They will need to pay the £10 fee and provide a prize for the draw by a certain date to reserve their space. We will also avoid using the Year 6 classroom as it seemed to be a little ‘out of the way’ for some, so the inhabitants got somewhat lonely later in the afternoon!

Other news

Unfortunately, there was a hiccup with our order of a new outdoor school noticeboard just before the summer holidays but we didn’t find out until we returned this month, so we are in the process of ordering through a different company and hope to be seeing it in action very soon. The interactive whiteboard in the new classroom is up and running. Your fundraising efforts provided that!

The Year 6 ‘Surprise Trip’ in July was a huge success and enjoyed by all. We have examples of their graffiti art up in school. PTA funded the transport costs so that parents just had to pay for the workshops themselves.
