Violet Class (Reception)

Welcome to the Violet Class (Reception) page!

Violet class is taught by Miss Welling and TA Mr Hewitt.

March 2020

In Violet Class we have been trying really hard with our reading and writing. We enjoy playing blending games on the interactive whiteboard as well as writing daily ‘super sentences’. On World Book Day we loved
reading the rhyming story ‘Oi Frog!’ and have since produced some excellent writing and illustrations to continue the story. We learnt some dance routines to story songs with Miss Featherstone which we danced to in our pyjamas; that was lots of fun! We have been learning about what makes 3D shapes special
and can now give great descriptions of each shape. We gave clues to our friends to guess the shape and made some excellent buildings using wooden blocks and construction straws.

January 2020

Violet Class have chosen to learn about ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ this term. This interest arose as they busily played in their new ‘deconstructed role play’ area (which is a space that consists of boxes, tubes , materials and other resources that can be anything – allowing them to use their own imaginations to create whatever they would like the space to be). One of the first creations was a pet clinic followed by a house and a racing car… something different being constructed by the minute depending on who is playing there. The level of language and creativity taking place is wonderful to see. We have also painted our favourite animals, created silhouette safari art and made ‘loose part’ pictures of wildlife where we discussed our care and concern for the problems that litter can cause for animals.

November 2019

In Violet Class we have been reading the story ‘Pumpkin Soup’ and had lots of fun making our own ‘silly soup’. Afterwards, we drew pictures and used our phonic skills to write the initial sounds of each silly ingredient that we had used. In Maths, we have been playing some estimating games and are trying to spot small amounts of objects around the classroom without needing to count them. We really enjoyed dressing up as superheroes for ‘Children in Need’. We began the day with a Pudsey Bear yoga activity and enjoyed creating wonderful superhero masks. We have also been busy creating wet chalk pictures as well as autumn tree collages at the creation station in our classroom. In RE we have been learning about how babies are welcomed into the world by people from different religions.

September 2019

Reception Class are all enjoying the Autumn term with lots of new routines to familiarise themselves with and learning about all aspects of school life.

This term our topic is ‘Journeys’ and we have been reading stories about characters who go on a journey. We have been doing some outside learning with great enthusiasm and interest, looking at the changing seasons and how the plants and animals are making their own journeys into winter.

The role play area is a hive of activity as the children have been taking rides in our resident hot air balloon and flying off to new places to explore. In the outside tents,  it has been fun to make food and serve hot coffee and cake most days.

The children have been enjoying  dough and ribbons disco for strengthening their pincer grip for writing.

New pre-cursive handwriting sessions are well underway and the children have risen to the challenge to learn the  letters, sounds and develop their pencil grip too!

We are also busy enjoying numbers,  having fun playing games on the iPads to support our learning and lots of practical maths games to understand the value, order and appearance of a number.

The start of school is such a special time and the children are buzzing with excitement as they settle into their own learning journey.
